Episode 20: Exploring the Science and Handwavium of Possessions: A Journey Through Supernatural Horror

We take over Reed’s Local with Melissa & the writer/director of Killer Piñata series, Stephen Tramontana, diving into spirits, possessions, women in horror, creepy doll & tons of movie recommendations
Rabbit Hole of Research Co-hosts at Reed's Local
Note: At ~the 6 minute mark our recording was cut, even though we talked for 1 hour. We don’t know what happened, but my story is the Reed’s Local ghost interrupted our recording—you can hear a noise before the recording cuts! But Rabbit Hole of Research ain’t afraid of any ghosts and we went back to do the recording, because the show goes on! Enjoy!

In the second October of Horror episode the Rabbit Hole Research dives into the spine-chilling realm of possessions and spirits, perfectly timed for Halloween. We take over Reed Local, with several guests. Reed’s Local co-owner and horror buff, Melissa Genova Hill; the writer/director of Killer Piñata series, Stephen Tramontana; and Luc (Reed’s handyman and movie buff). We unravel the complexities of how spirits possess both people and objects, backed by historical and cultural insights. Our discussion traverses iconic horror movies like 'Amityville Horror,' 'Evil Dead,' 'Child's Play,' and 'Christine,' weaving in contemporary debates on the genre's impact in literature and film. A special segment ties together horror and women's empowerment through 'Jennifer's Body,' coupled with childhood scares featuring a humorous anecdote about a 'possessed' Chatty Cathy doll. We also explore how horror can engage children with references to 'Five Nights at Freddy's' and 'Monster House.’

This episode is packed with a ton of possession movie recommendations and nostalgic reflections on possession horror classics. Remember to check out the show notes for a full list of Movies, Shows and Books mentioned in this episode!

Our goal is to have fun learning science through the lens of science fiction, fantasy, and pop-culture. We will start in one place and let the conversation lead us down the winding scenic road exploring the science in science fiction, separating the facts from the Handwavium. We’ll have a little fun and you’ll learn a few facts you can use to impress your friends at a party or use as a conversation starter to go down your own rabbit holes.
