Joe, Georgia, Mary, Wes, and Nick all gave their answer at the end, would you join the hive? What would it take to change your answer?
I would not. Total capitalist individualism is not the answer. But neither is a hive mind. I think my answer is somewhere in the middle. It would be hard for me to change my answer lol. Maybe if our world became a perfect place would I consider it.

The episode draws a line between a cult and a true hive mind. A cult has a leader with a motive, a hive mind has neither. Do you buy that distinction, or like Nick, feel that it’s a technicality?
I buy the distinction. It makes sense. And since there is no hiearchy, it would be better than a cult. But, I do not trust human nature, especially given history. Charismatic leaders have called for a utopian world and, often times have followed up with a tyrannical system. So, yes there is a.clear difference, but I do not trust it in practice.

Mary brought up concepts from yoga philosophy, the idea that the “you” you think of as yours is actually a collective of everything that came before you. Does that make the idea of a hive mind less scary or more?
What Mary says makes sense. We are shaped by what we see, hear, experience, etc. And all of this (all we experience and sense) is built off of so many experiences etc. We are also not our thoughts. This does make it less scary.
Good info about the neuron and the internal nervous system. Good summary of the hive mind also.
Hehe I like the banter.
Rabbit Hole of Research Wiggle Dance episode 😜
Oh ya, the hand in Wednesday is its own sentient being. :) Cool example.
I need to see Plurbius but I got rid of Apple TV recently. It sounds awesome.
Yeah, very few people leave cults.
Interesting how a hive has no leader figure. So it is a collective. Hmm intriguing.
Wow, everyone has the same knowledge and skills? Interesting. And in the show, the entire world is a membrer of the hive? Intriguing.
Echo chambers can be like the hive.
Georgia, I know what you mean! I have gotten ads for things I have said AND things I have thought about lol. And once, I talked about a cruise with my parents and got a cruise ad on my work computer the next day.
It is cool that Mary is not on social media. YouTube is better than social media IMO lol.
Is the browser called "Ecosia"? I want to check because YouTube captions might not be right.
Apologies about any misspellings (I am watching on YouTube and not Substack).
I should use Opera or DuckDuckGo browsers. Do you like the Brave browser? I had to turn off AI on Firefox.
Yeah, not cool how gen AI info pops up on Google. I do check the sources that the gen AI summary uses to make sure it is accurate when I see the summary.
Lol we do need aliens to study our consciousness.
Good info about the MRI.
Noetics (sp?) is intriguing!
Oh yeah! I think Oliver Sacks talked a bit about Acquired Savant Syndrome in his book, "Musicophilia". I did not read much of it but I remember an example of that in the book.
Have you read the late Oliver Sacks' books? If so, I am curious about your thoughts 😊
Wow, I did not know about body's layers in yoga. That is intriguing! I want to learn more.
The information that Mary mentioned is also helpful for dealing with anxiety too.
"Lose Your Mind: The Path to Creative Invincibility" sounds like a superb book.
The discussion about plants reminds me of the book, "The Hidden Life of Trees". I do not know how accurate it is, but from what I remember that it discussed tree communication. Curious if you read it, Joe, and if so, do you think it is accurate? :)
Wow, it scares me a bit how common fungi are. But then again, I might be too scared from seeing a bit of Last of Us.
Wow! The slime mold was able to efficiently find food sources at all the Tokyo stations and the way it found them was just like the subway system? Intriguing!
Yep, AI is predictive. It is not sentient. And hehehe I pick slime mold over AI as well.
Avatar is a superb example too.
Nick, excellent analogy. Great points. I too think there is an ulterior motive. There sure has been in history.
Grouphood vs. Selfhood. Agreed that cults have the former and a hierarchy.
But I am with Nick...I worry that a hive mind would result in a hirearchy just like in real life. I would not trust it because of how people are. I am cynical of this too.
All these systems seem good on paper but do not work out in real life. There are so many injustices in them around the world.
No individual thought. That would scare me lol. Maybe I am like Carol hehe.
I do not want to be a part of a hive mind but ultra individualism that we have today also does not work.
Good point, Mary! Authoritarians will try to limt diversity of thought, but when an idea catches on, it can spread far. This reminds me of the Arab Spring and how the uprising in Tunisia inspired revolutions throughout the Middle East and North Africa.
Ooh insect-like aliens? Awesome.
Cool literary examples.
The Thing is neat!
Good point. There is a bunch of fearmongering over collectivism.
Reminds me of one reason why we do not have universal healthcare is because of fearmongering over collectiveism. I have spoken with people from Europe before and the views there on collective responsibility differ so much from here.
This reminds me also about the issue of homelessness. So many shame homeless individuals but don't talk about how so many are just one paycheck from poverty. There are so many pervasive inequities and injustices that can only be solved collectively.
Hive mind vs total individualism - the answer for me is somewhere in the middle.
This is something I think about a lot too as a Chinese-American. Chinese culture is more collectivist and American cultute is more individualist. The culture clash has led to me struggling with my identity. I identify with both cultures.
And that is why Ms. Marvel's first graphic novel "No Normal" resonated with me.
This morning, I listened to an episode from the CBC podcast "Bookends" that touched on the conflict between collectivist norms in Korean cultute and individualist norms in Canada (and in the West overall). The episode title is "What's the Cost of the Immigrant Success Story?" I definitely recommend it. It is great!
Sorry for the tangents. The topic really resonates with me. I have not seen Plurbius but the topics in this episode hit my heart. I love the discussion!
Yes!! I agree with taxing billionares like lottery winners.
And yeah, the top do not get much accountability. I think those at the top will scapegoat so that people will fight instead of uniting and calling for accountability and equity.
Cool! Thank you, Joe!! I appreciate the info! Sorry for the misspellings. YouTube captions are sometimes off.
I hope you enjoy The Hidden Life of Trees if you read it!
I have been reading a sci fi novel that has a hive mind among a non-human species 🙂. The book is called "The Stardust Grail". I am enjoying it (not done yet but I am loving it). Please let me know if you read it 😀.

But I am still cynical of a hive mind haha.
Thanks for sharing and listening! Stay you😊
YW! And haha I will! Awesome episode! I had a wonderful time listening to the episode!

I would not join lol. I can relate to Nick. Lol
Lol I need a name tag 😅
Great episode! Superb discussion. Take care!
Yes the browser is called Ecosia, and the study of non localized consciousness is called Noetic Sciences.
I have no ready the Hidden life of Trees, but sounds fascinating, I’ll check it out.
Thanks for listening and sharing!
