NYT bestselling author Jonathan Maberry joins us to explore the handwavium, biology and symbolism behind strong skin—from the Thing’s rocky dermis to memory tattoos, and the scars that shape identity.
Excellent episode. One of the best ones yet and one of my favorites thus far :).
:) I realized that I forgot to answer these questions in my YouTube comment, so I'll try to keep my responses short.
If you could design your own “strong skin” power, what would it protect you from—and what would it cost?
Bullets at least (even though I've never been shot at, I think it'd be cool to be bulletproof). What would it cost? Well if it would just cost me big macs (and if big macs wouldn't lead to cholesterol, heart attacks, or other health problems), I think I'd pay that cost lol
What’s your favorite tough-skinned character across comics, mythology, or folklore?
Ooh that's tough. Maybe Supergirl and Superman.
Could emotional trauma literally reshape your body? Should superpowers reflect scars?
Realistically, it probably could, right? It can impact your heart and brain (due to increased stress response, right?) Great question. I'm not sure about the second one, but I think that can lead to some good writing.
Would you volunteer for a real-world version of Luke Cage’s experiment if it meant near-invulnerability?
No lol. I'd only take it if I can have it by magic lol, not by some science experiment, especially if the scientists were sus.
Alex, thanks for listening and the kind words. It was a fun episode.
And If it weren’t for sus scientists and lax safety standards in labs and chemical factories we’d not have many of our favorite superheroes and villains😂😂😂
