What do WWII pilots, bioengineering, and E.T. have in common? The crew dives into the strange science and pop‑culture legacy of Gremlins with special guest Chris Guzman.
Gremlins definitely felt like a horror movie when I first watched it as a kid. Nowadays I firmly consider it a Christmas satire. We're debating whether or not my kids are ready to watch the movie over the looming winter break. You can't unstart the nightmares, after all.
Ha, by the time I saw Gremlins (9ish), I was already a grizzled veteran of practical horror effects courtesy of Rob Bottin (The Thing) and H. R. Giger (Alien), so gremlins seemed like an afterschool special on what happens when you don’t follow arbitrarily constructed rules😊
So, If your kids are older than 9, or carry a smartphone around, I say go for it. What’s the worse that could happen, that a few sleepless nights cannot fix 🤪
Do you remember your first time watching Gremlins? Did it feel like a horror film, a comedy, or something else entirely?
I haven't watched it, so I can't say. But I want to see it :D :).
Could Gremlins realistically function as a biotech weapon?
Yes, based on what I heard, it certainly can. :)
Which movie creature has the weirdest biological logic, Xenomorphs, Tribbles, or something else, that we should talk about on the RHR Podcast?
Great question. I'm not sure. I don't know enough creatures to truly say...But I think a "Biology of Predator/Yautja" would be awesome :). So would be a biology of Kalisk (from Predator: Badlands). :).
Hey Joe, Georgia, Nick, and Chris 😊! Awesome that he is an artist for a boxing hall of fame 😀
I should attend Northwest Comic Con one day 😊
I didn't know British pilots were the origin of the gremlins term.
I need to see the Gremlins movie. I should see it before Christmas this year. Fingers crossed as I really need to see it. I need to see Aliens and Alien. I only saw Romulus.
I called Empire Strikes Back a sequel but Chris made a solid point. I should rethink it haha
Interesting that sunlight impacts them but not a room light. I wonder if flashing lights in a concert would affect them. I guess they are the opposite of Superman since Superman requires the sun and the sun can hurt them, the gremlin characters.
Extremophiles are intriguing. I need to read up more about them.
Before I continue, would you recommend me to watch Gremlins 1 first or the animated series first?
Lol! Sounds like a bad science classroom.
The 24 hour clock is a human creation. Do the gremlins observe time in the same way? And what is their perception of time? Good points about the circadian system. I wonder how it is similar and different than humans' circadian systems. 😊
Haha my dino dragon character Peculiarexus loves raw and cooked chicken. He prefers cooked chicken though, especially steamed chicken lol
Lol what if I am eating chicken while watching Gremlins?
LOL yeah, if I eat that much, I would get a stomach ache too. But my superhero character Selina could eat a ton...though not raw food. She might make a lot of bathroom jokes if she ate that though. Her and my character Matt annoy Selina's girlfriend, Emmanuelle, with such humor lol. Okay enough stinky side tangents from me ;)
Wow, so the water would have a huge impact on them? Intriguing.
Makes sense that they can escape suspicion since they are cute. No one would suspect a cute creature.
So there was a mom who took down a ton of gremlins? Neat! Lol Microwaves. Intriguing haha.
Lol maybe they are samurai fans or are interested in Japanese history. Maybe that is why they have swords lol.
Hahaha Nick, do you keep a katana to protect yourself from zombies? =P
Imagine feeding the gremlins a lot of Big Macs and Happy Meals lol.
Lol beer. Imagine them drinking vodka.
I am interested in history. But I do not know if Benjamin Franklin was an alcohol connoisseur.
I have not seen Jacob's Ladder. Would you recommend it?
I did not know about the WWII lore either. It is intriguing.
Wow, I didn't know that this is a sequel to E.T.
Legends of Tomorrow had an ET parody episode where the adult aliens were deadly ones called Dominators but ET like kid was adorable and funny.
Release the Dante cut! Kidding.
Sounds like it is brutal - the uncensored version.
Haha wow, you saw some violent films as a kid, Joe. Were you scared while watching The Thing as a kid?
Haha I liked ET as a kid. Shame, Joe. Kidding.
Christopher is right. That is an English pronounciation of the Cantonese words for devil/gremlin (which sounds like mor guay - well not exactly but I cannot think of a 100% phonetical pronounciation). Side tangent: this reminds me of how mirrors and tigers are thought to be able to scare away evil spirits in Chinese folklore.
It needs pain? Lol now i imagine anvils falling on them lol
Haha it is fur =P. Lol - Chuck Norris. I thought gremlins would fear Chuck Norris lol
Episode 50? Awesome!! Congrats! It is a wonderful podcast!
I should see Chris' art! I should see his IG!
If my dino-dragon character, Peculiarexus, ate chicken, would he become a gremlin? Haha Awesome episode, guys! Take care! 😃
Anytime, Joe! As always, you, Georgia, and Nick did a great job interviewing and facilitating the conversation! I love the podcast.
Hahaha I'll be sure to cook chicken thoroughly. I've had food poisoning before and it sucks. I'm not a gremlin though. At least I don't think I am lol XD. I'll start with the first film. thanks!

Thanks for listening. glad you like the episode. It was a lot of fun. Cannot wait to talk about ET with Chris.
I’d Start with the first Gremlins movie (it’s the best). 😂 and you can eat chicken, just cook it throughly 🤢
Jacob’s ladder is a good movie, just trippy.

Haha thanks for the info about Jacob's Ladder! :)
