Fear without control is a phobia. Fear with control is entertainment. But where is YOUR line? Is there a horror movie, book, or game that pushed you past it?

Good question. I think the thing with horror movies is that I don't get scared easily by horror but I can get a bit overwhelmed by the gore (regardless of genre though horror typically is the most gory) or ultra psychologically disturbing content. Not exactly sure where my line is exactly but I don't think I can handle The Boys. I think watching "Us" and other (horror and non horror) things like "Punisher", "Unsane", "Game of Thrones", "Sinners" and some other ones have boosted my tolerance levels for horror.

The crew shares their personal phobias; crowds, deep water, beaches, hobos, and clowns made the list. What’s yours, and did a horror movie give it to you or did you already have it?

Hmmm I am not scared of beaches, crowds, etc.. but I guess I am scared of deep water. It is why I never learned to swim. Also a bit scared of sentient AIs though neither of these were caused by horror movies (Person of Interest nade me scared of AIs). I fear wasps too lol

Phrique, Joe, Nick, and Georgia all have a soft spot for practical effects and the gritty texture of 70s and 80s horror. What’s a modern horror film you think actually gets it right?

"Sinners" gets it right :)

One modern horror show that is likely great (based on the manga) is "Death Note". I love the manga. And I heard the anime is great also. :) Let me know if you check it out (and sorry for adding another comment; I thought of it later on).

Hey Joe, Georgia, Nick, and Phrique! 😊 Wow, 5 books is a lot. Cool 😊

Is Wayne Industries a sponsor 😜?

Awesome description of horror and fear.

I had not heard of splatterpunk. Cool that it has commentary. Great chapter titles!

Lol some great premises to Phrique's stories! 70s and 80s are not old! Hahaha I still refuse to acknowledge 90s rock as classic rock😂. 😅

LOL handy.

Yeah I went to Catholic school for about 5 years. I do not remember much but I do remember nuns being strict.

Yes, I remember horror often has a political msg.

Lol horror does not usually scare me but people do 😅 so I can relate.

Yes! Horror is a good and safe way to explore fear.

One of my few body horror novels that I read is "Someone You Can Build A Nest In". It is very good. I recommend it.

Yeah it is hard to balance between showing too much of your hand or showing too little and not having enough info. I struggle with that, especially when it comes to having enough internal dialogue and info without revealing way too much or giving away too much.

It is cool how Phrique is able to use humor to break tension. Humor is tough - you want to be funny but also not overdo it (like they do in Marvel films with humor during a serious scene). Great description of how the brain processes fear and how humor helps the mind calm down and catch up. Haha I remember the 5 inch discs.

Lol I remember seeing a Chinese horror movie once as a kid where a woman was beheaded and her spirit appeared. I do not remember the title but I had a nightmare that night lol.

I did not know phobia was fear without control but it makes sense. Good comparison with entertainment, Joe.

You are right that fear stems from many years ago. Back when our ancestors were afraid of being killed by tigers and other animals, right?

Makes sense that fear and disgust are tethered.

I have some fear of germs so I can relate.

LOL yes you lick rocks to get powers and will be as powerful as Spider-Man - kidding.

I didn't see Friends without a laughtrack but what Nick said got me interested. Ross is toxic so I am not surprised he might be psychotic too.

Yep! Music can bring out the emotions. They def set movie tones :).

I should play and watch Fallout😊.

Yes! The Thing was absolutely psychological. I like that.

I prefer older TVs. Not a big fan of Smart TVs (though I have one). I guess I should watch horror films on my (old) laptop now. I saw Alien Romulus and it did not scare me. But I wonder if the original Alien movie would.

I have not seen much horror. I do not get scared easily but I can get a bit grossed out by the gore. I liked Us a lot and it did not scare me, but the gore was a bit overwhelming at times.

Lol yeah if you can see them, they absolutely can see you hehe.

I think I like quiet horror more. Interesting how it was more subdued then. I might like it more.

But...I did like Sinners and was able to handle some non horror but still bloody shows like Punisher so I might be able to watch more horror/stomach it.

I never saw Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Do you recommend it?

Haha yep we should have avoided dyes. Didn't the govt ban some dyes in Spicy Cheetos in the past year? I heard they are stricter in the EU with this.

I saw the first Avatar film. I should see the others.

I love sci-fi and it is cool when it is mixed with horror.

One of my fave sci-fi horror movies is Annihilation. It is awesome.

Is Alien sci-fi horror? Curious if the Predator films are too.

Uncanny Valley of Flesh sounds creepy but also interesting. Good tie in to AI, Georgia 😊.

Cool that Phrique made posters and covers and wrote a horor rom com!

LOL yeah reading that to your mom would be a horror story!

Phrique's ideas are intriguing :)

Slay the Lake sounds like a great event!

Yep! Writing can be solitary but finding community helps😊 It is invaluable!

True. It is scary today. But community helps a lot 😊

I guess I should watch The Monkey or When Evil Lurks.

Big crowds can be tough. I like big cons but yeah crowds can be overwhelming at times.

I like The Thing.

I should watch Evil Dead.

But yeah, I recommend Someone You Can Build A Nest In :). Good book.

Take care! Awesome episode!!

Thanks Alex! I’ll check out Someone You Can Build A Nest In.

And I would recommend watching Invasion of the body Snatchers. (The 78 one is my favorite), but the 1956 one is good campy sci-fi fun.

Anytime :) Hope you enjoy the book!

Awesome! I should see it. I might check out the 78 one and then the 56 one. Or vice versa lol :) Thank you.
