At Chicago’s Reed’s Local, we team with Slasher Sauces’ Jesse & Alana and Reed's co-owner Melissa to dice-up the slasher genre. Origins, psychology, tech-age twists, cult favorites, and the Final Girl
So I'm not really able to answer the 1st two since I haven't really seen many slasher films, but I wanted to answer the other two:
Who is your favorite Final Girl or Boy?
If this counts, I did like Rain from Alien: Romulus. Clever and compelling character, and I was rooting for her.
What’s your favorite slasher movie/book?
Maybe Alien: Romulus :). I did like "Us" also (not sure if it is a slasher) but Alien: Romulus is my favorite thus far!
Also, this isn't as slasher manga or show, but I recommend the Death Note manga (and anime, though I haven't seen the live action Netflix version). It's a really good one (and fits for October).
Hey Joe, Nick, Georgia, Melissa, Jesse, and Alana! It's awesome how there are a lot of guests this time :) It was neat how Reed's was the location of a podcast ep last season.
I had an inkling of what a slasher film is (though I didn't know much as I don't usually watch horror movies). Joe's summary is really helpful. I didn't know Sweeney Todd books were that old lol. Footnotes are the show notes lol. Kidding. Haha you mentioned "Bob Clark" and I thought you said "Bob Barker" at first LOL. I need to visit Reed's. I like pinball machines. I'd play the Halloween pinball machine even though I never saw the movie lol :).
It's neat how Jesse and Alana make hot sauces inspired by the horror genre. I know a comic book shop in Northern California that also sells hot sauces :). Awesome that Slasher Sauces prioritize flavor over heat. I love it when hot sauce is tasty but aren't excessively spicy. I have a moderate tolerance but am cautious (especially after I once had a rough time with wasabi lol). Do you have a favorite hot sauce, Joe, Nick, and Georgia? :) Would you recommend me to start with Halloween 1? (Since I've never seen a Halloween film). Yeah, I can see a serial killer interpretation for the "Every Breath You Take" song lol. I wonder if someone has written a story with that as the main premise. Great point about Predator. I didn't think about the moral code, but that's interesting how he has a moral code.
I know this is probably not a slasher film, but did you like Prey (2022 film in the Predator Franchise)? I love that film.
I learned something - I didn't know a slasher film is one where the killer doesn't have a moral code. But that makes sense. Great point about Freddy Kruger. I have heard of him and may have seen clips of him.
Is "Us" a slasher film? I remember seeing that film and I liked it. And haha, yeah I heard that stupid decisions happen often in horror movies. I wonder if this is caused by stress though. Like how people can sometimes say stupid things on game shows due to anxiety, are the stupid decisions due to stress/fear?
Haha the overkill reminds me of a scene from "Gotham" where the villain was not dying from anything that the protagonists were using. Gunshots weren't working. Then, the Penguin had his henchman use an RPG. That took the villain out. LOL. Buffy had a similar scene where she used an RPG to kill a villain that couldn't be killed otherwise LOL.
But this doesn't happen often in horror movies, right? lol
So I know "Prey" (2022) isn't a slasher, but it is an example of where the main character adapts to the serial killing alien/predator. And she's awesome and badass :) (the MC).
I didn't know that there are more serial killers today. That's scary. Crime is generally down (especially compared to the 90s, but I wonder why there are more serial killers today).
Yeah, I can see AI being an influence for horror movies. A creepy AI chatbot...I can see that being used as a storyline. Or an AI manipulating people and having human agents to haunt others. Person of Interest had an evil AI that used human agents to oppress and target people who it felt was a threat.
A killer pinata? Interesting hehe. I hadn't heard of it. But that'd be interesting. I can see a final girl being one who was meek but becomes brave as the story progresses. The Reeds' events sound awesome! :)
Ooh, "Behind the Mask" sounds good! I haven't seen "Creep", but I will look into that movie too. (And how it seems funny and ridiculous interests me). I heard of Scream, and I should look into it also. I might see Black Christmas also. Maybe Hellraiser also.
Haha a ghost who likes gin? Neat! :) Intriguing experience (scary too).
Great episode. Neat discussion! Take care, everybody :). Have a nice evening!
