Can a murder be solved across timelines? Author Lee Matthew Goldberg joins the Rabbit Hole crew to explore time travel, paradoxes, time machines, and mind-bending memory loops.
1. If you could travel back in time to solve one real-world crime, which would it be—and why?
Would you stop it from happening or just uncover the truth?
Excellent question. There are so many unsolved crimes. But, I think I'd like to know what really happened to D.B. Cooper. He disappeared. Maybe he died? Who knows. I I'd like to uncover the truth. If I had superpowers, I'd bring him to justice.
Either that or find out who Jack the Ripper is and, if I was like Batman (I think there was a comic or animated film where he stopped Jack the Ripper) or Superman, I'd take him down. Alas, superpowers are all handwavium, so that's out of the picture.
2. Would you rather team up with your past self or your future self to solve a mystery?
Future self. Past self is too naive and doesn't have enough nuance or knowledge to help me.
3. Do you think memory is a reliable form of time travel—or is it just a corrupted archive?
No. Memories can be distorted. As we get older, we forget things. It's also affected by stress and anxiety. I wouldn't say memories are all false, but they can't be counted as totally accurate either. Bias can also alter memories or even one's understanding of the event that one witnessed.
Has déjà vu ever made you question your timeline?
Maybe. I can't think of any specific examples. But it has made me do a double take.
4. If time travel became real tomorrow, what’s the first rule you’d break?
Either meet my past self and lecture him or change the future. I'd be very tempted to save Abraham Lincoln and also be very tempted to - if I had superpowers - stop Tojo, Mussolini, and Hitler. Both of these actions would change history.
Lastly, have a wonderful time, Joe :) I hope you have a great time at DragonCon :)
I got "Red Line Chicago Horror Stories" recently. I'm excited to read it, and I'm happy for you, Joe. Proud of you too. Take care :)
My pleasure, Joe :) It's awesome how you have a story in the anthology :). I'm excited to read it!!
Yep, the D.B. Cooper story is crazy. I remember there was an episode of Loki in which Loki was D.B. Cooper LOL. But yeah, there is a lot of mystery about him in real life.
Very true. I think that's why, as tempted as I'd be, I wouldn't take part in time travel. It's way too risky.
Have a great day, my friend :). Hope you're doing well.
Hey Joe, Nick, Georgia, and Lee! Great definition. Nice way to make time catchy. Awesome work, Joe. And haha you have done this nine times. Time travel :).
That is cool how there are two books in the series 😊.
Lee's story sounds awesome! I am intrigued.
The Flash had a weird paradox in S3. Savitar, the villain, came into existence because Iris was killed, but then he was the one who killed her. It was weird and awful.
I wonder which paradox Interstellar used.
Pedestrian paradox is intriguing. Lee's book is cool! I like how he went against the rule.
Tenet had the 'do not meet your past self' rule expressed by some characters - though meeting past selves led to various events in the movie. And you had one group coming from the future (who already knew what happened) and another group traveling linearly. It was so confusing but so cool lol. Joe, Nick, and Georgia, did you see Tenet? If so, did you like it?
Oh yeah, the Avengers had the different dimension time travel, right? Instead of changing the timeline, they made a new one when they went back thru time.
Good point that traveling in time contaminates the environment. I just got an idea of my MC Steph going back in time by accident, letting out one of her giant sneezes, going back to the present, and finding out her sneeze changed time Lol.
Yes! Sci-fi is fun. There is a ton of freedom. I like writing YA but I would definitely like to read Lee's thriller books also :)
I need to see "History of Time Travel" and "Safety Not Guaranteed"
X-Men Days of Future Past had time travel also. Joe and Nick, do you remember if there was a paradox in the film?
Wow. I did not realize it but memory is time travel. But memory is distorted and not always accurate.
Haha someone in Tenet got stuck in a wall.
Terminator 2 is awesome! It and The Dark Knight are two examples where the sequel is equally good or better than the original.
If I go back in time, I might try to stop WWII or save Lincoln. There is a lot I would be tempted to do. Realistically, you are right. I don't think it would be safe for me to go back in time either.
I might go back to my younger self and instill some wisdom - only to be ignored probably. Lol I like early 2000s music so I might relive Linkin Park
Awesome discussion! Great episode! Have a great day!!

Alex, thanks for picking up a copy of Redline—I hope you enjoy the stories!
Thanks for answering. I had to look up D.B. Cooper—very interesting.
And in your time travel historical fixes: be careful of the predestination paradox, by trying to stop an event, you may become the cause🤔
Cheers,
J
